    Castle Time Trial

After last weekend's botched TT at Mokuleia, I wanted some revenge at today's Castle TT. All week long I'd been given reports about ripping winds on the course (35+ mph gusts). Despite that, I threw on the 56t chainring late on Saturday night, and decided to race on my Zipp Sub9 and 1080. I figured I'd just need to hold on tight and ride harder.

I drove over to the race start, arriving at about 5:30am, and did a few laps of Olomana in the dark for my warmup. In 2007 and 2008 I had been the first rider to start, but this year I was the 9th rider off and had a few rabbits to chase! The combination of P3C, Sub9 and 1080 and strong crosswinds meant leaving some extra room while passing riders. I caught my 30sec man (Carl Brooks) towards the end of Waimanalo, Kate Johnson a little later, then David Lum before the Sea Life Park. I didn't see another rider again until I was on the final climb to the finish line. Descending Makapu'u was nuts... I stayed in the aerobars for as long as possible while spinning the 56 ring, having to stabilize the bike by placing my knees on the top tube a few times. I broke 50mph right before the turn at the bottom, but chickened out and moved my hands to the base bar. At this point I thought to myself "Who ever wins this has some big freakin' balls".

I emptied the tank on the final climb and crossed the line with my heart thumping away at 199bpm. I hadn't started my SRM intervals at the start so I had no idea what my time was. After a quick chat with a few finishers I rode back to the start at Maunawili H.S.

Later at the awards I found out that I'd posted the fastest time by over 1 minute to Tony Lang, and Ricky Armstrong a few more seconds in arrears. I'm back!
