"I have always believed cycling offers so much. Whether you do it for a healthy lifestyle, a way to spend time with family and friends, an outlet for your energy away from the stresses of life, or with aspirations to race, or for other reasons. The sport has a technical side involving equipment and clothing and a physical side which at times can demand extreme suffering. Finally a mental side where a rider can be pushed to limits never thought possible. - Kevin Livingston"

    MCBH Crit #2

Last Sunday was #2 in the 4-event criterium series put on by Momentum Multisport at Kaneohe Marine Corp Base. I decided to skip the first event so that I could continue getting in some quality training miles, but my new coach put me down for racing this, following it up with training right after.

I've done a limited number of interval workouts since last race season, so I wasn't sure how this race was going to feel. We started off at 8am with a neutral lap, followed by a flurry of attacks over the subsequent hour of racing. I was racing without any teammates, and the field had a few riders from Tradewinds, Cambio, and Quick Release, so common sense would be to not get counter-attacked too many times. and burnt my matches wisely.

Steve Chirco from HACC was the first rider to break the elastic and have a little solo time, taking the first prime. After he was reeled in, I took the next two primes. With a couple laps remaining Nguyen Le had a go, but was brought back, then Alex Eiler got on the front to set up Kevin Kawainui for the sprint finish (He won race #1 a few weeks back). I went into the corner with a good amount of speed, tried to go around the outside, but ended up going way too wide, into the wind... Game over! Kevin took the win, me second, and Tony Lang took third.

After the race, I threw on a jersey, loaded up spare tubes, co2's, money, cell phone etc into the pockets, gave the girlfriend a kiss, then headed back to Mililani around the North Shore. The first hour sucked, but I had a good climb up Pineapple Hill. By the time I got to Mililani, I had 96 miles in the legs and was rather fried. Good times!
