Last week I remembered that I should probably get my tires of choice on my Edge hoops for Haleakala… Of course no shop on the island ever seems to have the tubulars that I like. O’ahu stores mainly stock Germany tubbies. Anyway, I got a random call from IT+B last week asking what tubulars I suggest they order! Bingo… Not much later an order went in for the tires I wanted. To make things even more sweet, the tires arrived on Tuesday! I went to IT+B on my lunch to grab those, and ended up coming away with a shiny new pair of white Sidi’s, new cleats for my Speedplay Zero’s… or, and the tires!
On my drive back to work I had my life flash in front of me when another driver decided to swerve left into my lane (in the space that my truck was already occupying!)… Fortunately, my fast reactions (thanks to years of mountain bike racing) kicked in, I swerved away from the vehicle and avoided what was really looking like a potential 55mph crash. Not sure if the person fell asleep or what. I spent the rest of the afternoon feeling like I wanted to throw up. Ate half my lunch and threw away the rest as I couldn’t even look at it.
After work I rocked out a sub 1-hour training ride, knocking some big watts out of the park on a 6km climb, went home, showered, then it was time to fight! Mike vs. tin of Conti tubular glue (Das ist gut!) + wheels + tubular tires. I managed to get a nice even layer of glue… all over my hands. The tires went on without my having to kick the wheels around my apartment. Managed to get glue on my very comfortable Adidas pants. If I owned a cat I’m sure I’d have glued the moggie too! My fingers are sore from scrubbing the glue off, but the main thing is that I escape without getting any blistered thumbs.
