Looking for a retro steel ride…

Anyone got an older steel frame that they want to offload? I’m looking for either a Colnago, Pinarello, or Merckx… Colnago Tecnos or Master X Light would be nice. Probably looking for a 54cm top tube. Must also be able to fit 10 speed on it…

Schwag…

I got some schwag at Cycle to the Sun last weekend for the half-way prime at 5000ft… A Ritchey WCS flex-fit cap, and some cycling socks. The first person to email me, that doesn’t live in Hawaii, gets both the cap and socks… 3.. 2.. 1.. GO!

***UPDATE** Cap and socks are gone! That didn’t take long. Congrats to Greg from Utah!

Australia?

So… I’m going to Sydney with L.A. in September for 8 days, but so far we don’t have any real concrete plans for stuff to do while were there (other than trying to see Koala’s, Roo’s, Sydney Oprah House, climbing the Bridge…), or exactly where to stay. If anyone reading this has been to Sydney / Australia’s east coast, and has good suggestions for things to do, or see, I’m all ears!

Cycle to the Sun

Sunday’s race was pretty crazy, here’s how it went down:

0625 – I line up at the start.
0626 – I do about 8 double-takes, and receive verbal confirmation from my team mate, before realizing that my LA had flown to Maui just to be at my race! Surprise!!! How freakin’ cool is that!!!
0627 – My team mate David says “Oh shit, someone’s going to attack early!”
0630 – Race Starts
0630 – I attack off the line
0632 – Wireless SRM loses contact with Power and HR sensors
0635 – Finally manage to pair up the SRM PCVI and crankset to get power readings

I spent the best part of the next 2hrs riding own my own… From about 4000ft I could see Chris Lieto chasing me on his own about 1-2mins behind. At about 7500ft Chris was getting close, so I sat up and waited. We worked together for a bit, but he was taking some hard pulls and I eventually decided to let him go…

Somewhere about 8500ft I got off my bike to adjust my rear derailleur as the gears were jumping all over the place.

I had one time check that Lieto was 4mins ahead of me, but when I got to the lower parking lot the guys at the turn were going nuts and telling me that Chris wasn’t much ahead. Had I know I was so close I don’t think I’d have stopped to fix my gears earlier, but shit happens. I’ll never know how things would have panned out had I kept on the gas instead of taking care of the mechanical.

I wound up crossing the line 59sec behind Lieto, with last years winner, Dennis Farrell from Colorado, closing in fast to take 3rd place. After the finish, Chris told me that he was close to passing out on the final part of the climb and had to weave around the road to make it up… If I was riding a Trek TTX time trial bike with aerobars I’d probably have been weaving too. That’s bad ass!

The best part about the finish was having L.A. (wearing black) right there!

On Maui

After a hectic morning packing my bike and other stuff for Maui, and booking a flight to Sydney, I flew over to Kahului, Maui this morning with David Lelong. We flew on Island Air and it was a stress free trip… Check-in was easy, the security line was short, and the flight went by quick.

Final tune-up

Tonight, I headed out on the Cervelo for a couple intervals to keep the legs ticking over for Sunday’s climb up Haleakala. After an easy cruise over to Tantalus, I rode the first section of the TT (hillclimb) course to the stop down. Having ridden the climb 1000′s of times, I know my time splits at various points along the route. My first split normally takes about 1min 45sec but I got there in 1min 35sec which seemed to be pretty damn fast. I expected to crater a bit towards the end of the interval, but the watts kept coming and I got to the stop sign in 3min 28sec at 437w. After that climb I rolled down Papakolea, then rode a loop back around to do another intervals up Tantalus… and confirmed that I’m climbing damn good right now. I clocked 3min 21sec to the stop sign… I can’t remember ever doing it under 3min 30sec, and when I did do it that fast I don’t remember it feeling quite so easy.

I picked up the replacement fork for my Cervelo – A 3T Funda – Easily the sexiest fork currently on the market. Cut down the steerer, epoxied the insert in, waited 4hrs for the epoxy to cure, installed the fork. After that I threw on some new white bar tape. My R3SL now looks ready to rock for Sunday.

Tomorrow, Lelong and I fly over to Maui… It’ll be nice to chill out for a couple days before Haleakala! It’s a shame that L.A. isn’t coming along for the trip.

One more week until Dick Evans, then my 2008 season is in the books. It looks like I’ll be heading west for a vacation to Sydney, Australia with L.A. (without a bike). I can’t wait!

Cervelo fork recall…

As most people seem to know, yesterday, Cervelo announced a voluntary recall of Wolf SL forks that are used on some of their bikes. While this seems bad to some people, I think it shows what a good company Cervelo are. Why? Well, the Wolf SL forks pass the fork manufacturer’s test, BUT, they don’t pass Cervelo’s own tests. Supposedly the original fork manufacturer won’t warranty the forks, so Cervelo are taking care of the situation themselves. From their press release, it doesn’t sounds like the forks are going to break, but in a few cases forks have broken, but after they had been in a previous accident – What sub 300g fork wouldn’t! Press release below taken from the Cervelo E-news email:

Cervélo has identified a potential safety issue involving the Wolf SL fork. This fork is designed and manufactured by True Temper Sports of Memphis, Tennessee, using a blade shape supplied by Cervélo. All other aspects of the structural design, development and manufacture were done by True Temper Sports.

Under certain conditions, the fork steerer can crack and eventually break during normal use, which may cause the rider to lose control, fall and suffer potentially serious injuries. To date, there have been reports of injuries in the field resulting in minor abrasions and one broken wrist.

Though the fork passes US and international standards, this particular problem was not uncovered during those standard tests and the fork only showed this weakness in the field, typically after being damaged. After much work, we did develop a new test protocol that was able to replicate the same failure mode as seen in the field. If the fork steerer is damaged by impact (eg. by a crash, a fall from a roof rack, or another impact) then the damage may progress very quickly during use to complete separation.

We have seen that incidence of failure on this fork is higher than on other forks, and there is a potential for injury upon failure. True Temper Sports feels that the fork meets the industry standards and that the fork is therefore acceptable and no further action is required. Cervélo does not share this opinion and therefore, is proceeding with a recall of the True Temper designed and manufactured Wolf SL forks ourselves. True Temper Sports has declined to participate.

In order to conduct a recall one must be able to demonstrate that any replacement product does not display the same failure mode. We have demonstrated to the authorities that the forks we will use as a replacement – the 3T Funda Pro and the Easton EC90 SLX – pass all standard industry tests as well as the new Cervélo test that the True Temper Wolf SL fork fails.

We have obviously discontinued all use of the True Temper Wolf SL carbon bicycle fork. However, please note that this does not affect the Wolf CL and Wolf TT in any way, as both have a completely different structural design (and have passed the new Cervélo test protocol).

Although it is not usual for a third party to recall a product manufactured by another company, we feel it is a necessary step to take care of our customer, and we will proceed with the full recall at no cost to the dealer or consumer.

Anyway, out of a negative comes a positive. I’ll be rolling around on a 3T Funda fork and I’ve wanted one of those for the longest time!

Sticky!

Last week I remembered that I should probably get my tires of choice on my Edge hoops for Haleakala… Of course no shop on the island ever seems to have the tubulars that I like. O’ahu stores mainly stock Germany tubbies. Anyway, I got a random call from IT+B last week asking what tubulars I suggest they order! Bingo… Not much later an order went in for the tires I wanted. To make things even more sweet, the tires arrived on Tuesday! I went to IT+B on my lunch to grab those, and ended up coming away with a shiny new pair of white Sidi’s, new cleats for my Speedplay Zero’s… or, and the tires!

On my drive back to work I had my life flash in front of me when another driver decided to swerve left into my lane (in the space that my truck was already occupying!)… Fortunately, my fast reactions (thanks to years of mountain bike racing) kicked in, I swerved away from the vehicle and avoided what was really looking like a potential 55mph crash. Not sure if the person fell asleep or what. I spent the rest of the afternoon feeling like I wanted to throw up. Ate half my lunch and threw away the rest as I couldn’t even look at it.

After work I rocked out a sub 1-hour training ride, knocking some big watts out of the park on a 6km climb, went home, showered, then it was time to fight! Mike vs. tin of Conti tubular glue (Das ist gut!) + wheels + tubular tires. I managed to get a nice even layer of glue… all over my hands. The tires went on without my having to kick the wheels around my apartment. Managed to get glue on my very comfortable Adidas pants. If I owned a cat I’m sure I’d have glued the moggie too! My fingers are sore from scrubbing the glue off, but the main thing is that I escape without getting any blistered thumbs.

3 Golds!

Scotsman Chris Hoy wrapped up his track racing in Beijing winning his 3rd gold medal! The last time a Brit won 3 golds in a single Olympic games was 100 years ago!

Action packed weekend…

Saturday morning was spent waking up way too early to have a little Haleakala pre-race dry run. I woke up before sunrise, then messed around with various pre-race rituals. The eventual ride wasn’t anywhere near epic in length but the lack of duration was made up for with a healthy dose of intensity. That’s what tapering is all about – Rest more, train less, train harder, train smarter!

On Saturday afternoon, L.A. and I hit up the Diamondhead Market for lunch. I had grilled salmon w/fries (gourmet fish + chips!) and she went for the Portobello mushroom burger. We couldn’t find seating so ending up making a picnic out of the situation at a park.

Sunday morning I woke up with a mega headache and decided to pop a couple tylenol and get some extra sleep, instead of doing a planned group ride. I eventually got in a ride which was OK, followed by an afternoon nap, watching the Olympics, then catching a movie (Vicky Cristina Barcelona) which was better than I expected. After the movie L.A. and I checked out the Magic Island Family Festival… Did a couple of the rides, ate more food (shrimp pasta), and washed that down with a funnel cake! I also ate Laulau (Laulau is a Hawaiian dish. Traditionally, it consisted of pork wrapped in taro leaf) for the first time… 8 years of living in Hawaii and I managed to avoid Laulau until now!
